Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
